There are several opportunities to join the CFM Lab. If any of the opportunities below are of interest to you, then please email Matt at matthew.hennessy@bristol.ac.uk to discuss further.

PhD projects

We are looking for talented and enthusiastic students to work on PhD projects. Applicants should have a keen interest in fluid and solid mechanics, numerical simulations, and using mathematical techniques to solve real-world problems. There are opportunities to carry out experimental work as well.

We currently have PhD projects relating to:

  • Evaporation of particle-laden fluids
  • Multi-scale modelling of polymer gels using machine learning
  • Optimisation of hydrogel-based drug delivery systems
  • Shrinkage and swelling during 3D printing
  • Electro- and magneto-active hydrogels

Competitive funding is available for PhD projects. Details of PhD studentships are usually announced around December. Application deadlines are typically at the end of January. If you are interested in joining the group as a PhD student, you are strongly advised to get in touch in November or December.

Information about admission requirements for a PhD in Engineering Mathematics can be found here.

Post-doc opportunties

We are looking to recruit an innovation research associate to work on mathematical modelling of formulated products. This post is ideal for a researcher that is keen to work on applied problems in fluid and solid mechanics, and heat and mass transfer, with academic and industry partners. For more info, see the advert below:

We will soon be looking recruit a post-doctoral researcher to conduct experiments with electrically charged polymer gels (polyelectrolyte gels). The vacancy is likely to open in winter 2026. Please check back here regularly.
